HDR 04 - Rosario's Beach Old Pier

This set of 4 exposures was captured in February 22nd.
I went out for the whole day with some friends to discover photographic spots. One of them knew this area and in the late afternoon we decided to go there before we call it a day.
The place is a beach, Rosario's Beach, in the south coast of Tagus river estuary, at about 20 Km away from Lisbon, Portugal. The Sun was about to disappear behind the horizon. The tide was very low and this old pier looked great standing in the sticky mud, against a golden sunset sky. The time was short to go and grab my tripod in the car, so I got my feet in the mud and took these exposures with the camera handheld.
Back at home, I merged the shots in Photomatix, then I opened the resulting HDR in Photoshop to improve tones and contrast.

"O Velho Cais da Praia do Rosário".
Este grupo de 4 exposições foi tirado no dia 22 de Fevereiro.
Saí o dia inteiro com uns amigos para procurar locais para fotografar. Um deles conhecia esta àrea e então, decidimos lá ir ao anoitecer, antes de regressar a casa.
O lugar é uma praia na margem sul do estuário do rio Tejo, a praia do Rosário, a uns 20 Km de Lisboa. O Sol estava prestes a desaparecer no horizonte. A maré estava muito baixa e este velho cais, apoiado naquela lama pegajosa, ficava muito bem contra o céu dourado do pôr-do-Sol. Eu não tinha tempo para ir buscar o tripé ao carro, por isso, meti os pés na lama e tirei estas exposições com a máquina nas mãos.
De volta a casa, combinei a 4 fotos no Photomatix, depois abri o HDR resultante no Photoshop para melhorar os tons e o contraste.

Composite 06 - Global Financial Headache...

...Is all around us. Every day we watch the news, there's always one more company closing doors, contributing to the raising of unemployment. Tens or hundreds of workers, suddenly find themselves with no work, no revenue and no solution in sight. But the bills to pay will always be there, every month. They find no sympathy. Mortgage, car loan, phone, cable TV, Internet, gas, electricity, water, insurance, supermarket, kids education,... And we count our pennies and we wish they were made of rubber so that they could stretch. But they are not and we have to think how we get through! So we get this terrible headache...
For this image, I made the paper sheets in 3D and everything else is Photoshop work.

"Dor de Cabeça da Crise Financeira Global"... Está em todo o lado. Todos os dias assistimos nos noticiários a mais uma empresa a fechar as portas, contribuindo para o aumento do desemprego. Dezenas ou centenas de trabalhadores vêem-se de repente sem trabalho, sem rendimentos e sem uma solução rápida à vista. Mas as contas para pagar aparecem sempre, todos os mêses, insensíveis. Hipoteca da casa, crédito do carro, telefone, TV cabo, Internet, gás. eléctricidade, àgua, seguros, supermercado, a educação dos miúdos,... E contamos os tostões e desejamos que fossem feitos de borracha, para esticarem e darem para tudo... Mas não são e temos que pensar na melhor forma de nos safarmos! E então, aparece-nos está terrível dor de cabeça...
Para esta imagem, fiz as folhas de papel em 3D. Tudo o resto foi trabalhado no Photoshop.

Before-After 07 - It's time! Wake up!!

Is there anyone who enjoys being woken up like this? When you're peacefully sleeping in the most absolute silence, and suddenly,... Your heart jumps to your mouth, your whole body jumps 5cm from the mattress, your hair gets erected like wire and you wish you had a hammer to smash that thing down for good!...
I never really liked these devices. And 7 am is so early! Thankfully now we have digital alarm clocks with radio. We can set them to start the radio at any time with a sweet soft music in the lowest volume of the sound. The only problem is that in fact you might not wake up to enjoy the music but on the other hand you will live longer and with a healthy heart.
In this image, I isolated the clock in white background and, to create the sense of vibration, I applied a bit of motion blur and adjusted the layer opacity.

"Está na hora! Toca a acordar!!". Será que existe alguém que goste de acordar assim? Quando está descansada e profundamente a dormir, em silêncio absoluto e de repente,... O coração salta até à boca, todo o corpo dá um pulo de 5cm acima do colchão, o cabelo espeta-se como arame e desejamos ter ali à mão um martelo para espatifar aquela coisa de vez!...
Eu nunca gostei destes aparelhos. E 7 da manhã é cedíssimo! Ainda bem que agora temos despertadores digitais com rádio. Podemos escolher acordar com o rádio a qualquer hora, com uma música doce e suave e com o volume do som bem baixinho. O único problema é que de facto poderemos não acordar para apreciar a melodia, mas em contrapartida, viveremos mais anos e com um coração saudável.
Nesta imagem, isolei o relógio em fundo branco e, para criar a noção de vibração apliquei o filtro "motion blur" e ajustei a opacidade da camada.

Before-After 06 - Happy Valentine's Day

Valentine's day is approaching and images on the themes of love, romance and marriage, are very much requested around these days. So, I went in search for the 13 years old engagement ring I gave to my wifey. Poor thing... its heart-shaped box is so messed up. Nothing that a bit of Photoshop magic couldn't handle.
Here it is as good as new. And it's selling like hot cakes! Happy Valentine's Day!

O dia de São Valentim está a chegar e imagens sobre os temas de amor, romance e casamento estão a ser muito procuradas nesta altura. Assim, fui à procura do anel de noivado, agora com 13 anos, que ofereci à Sra. Caetano ;). Coitada da caixa em forma de coração. Toda amassada. Nada que um pouco de magia do Photoshop não resolva.
Aqui está, como nova! E a vender como pãezinhos quentes! Feliz dia de São Valentim!

Before-After 05 - God makes a pact with the Devil

This one was one of the first images that I uploaded to the microstock sites. It has been very successful and is still being downloaded at a steady pace.
I'm not much of a religious person and I never thought that this concept could be somewhat offensive to some people. That was never my intention, of course.
The fact is that some time ago I received a message from a image buyer that went across this image in Dreamstime.com, saying in a obvious angry tone, that I should be ashamed of myself because I should know that in the Bible this situation is not described so it could NEVER HAPPEN!!...
I wrote back to her saying I was very sorry if I had offended her but that's never been my intention, and in a humorous attempt I said "Take it this way: The Devil is trying to pull God into his domains... He's diabolic!"... Just a little joke...
She never wrote back. And I strongly believe she didn't buy the photo.
Thanks goes to CP and Zé for letting me borrow their arms.

"Deus Faz Um Pacto Com o Diabo". Esta foi uma das primeiras imagens que enviei para as agências de microstock. Tem tido bastante sucesso e ainda é comprada a um bom ritmo.
Eu não sou uma pessoa muito religiosa e nunca pensei que este conceito fosse de algum modo ofensivo para algumas pessoas. Com certeza que isso nunca foi a minha intenção. O facto é que há algum tempo atrás, recebi uma mensagem de uma compradora de imagens que se tinha cruzado com esta foto no Dreamstime.com, dizendo em tom obviamente zangado, que eu devia ter vergonha e que devia saber que esta situação não está descrita na Biblia e por isso NUNCA PODERÍA ACONTECER!!...
Eu respondi-lhe dizendo que lamentava de a ter ofendido mas que isso nunca foi intencional. E numa tentativa espirituosa de pôr paninhos quentes na fervura, disse "Veja assim: O Diabo está a tentar puxar Deus para os seu domínios... Ele é diabólico!"... Era só uma piadinha...
Ela não voltou a responder-me. E tenho um forte pressentimento de que não comprou a imagem.
Obrigado ao CP e ao Zé por me emprestarem os respectivos braços.

Composite 05 - Fresh Juicy Fruits!

Aren't we all sick and tired of rainy and cold days? Wouldn't it be great to have some sunny days for a change?! Well, before you know it, Spring will be here and with it, the desire to get rid of heavy clothes and feel the warmth of the Sun again. So, boys and girls, It's time to think of a little diet with the help of fresh, juicy fruits to kill that belly, right?

Não estamos já todos fartinhos de dias frios e chuvosos? Não era óptimo ter uns dias de Sol para variar?! Bem, não tarda nada está aí a Primavera e com ela, a vontade de despir estas roupas pesadas e sentir o calor do Sol outra vez. Por isso, meninos e meninas, está na hora de pensar numa pequena dieta, com a ajuda de frutas frescas muito sumarentas, para darmos cado da barriguinha, certo?

HDR 03 - Blazing Sky

This set of 4 exposures was captured in my last Summer vacations, in August '08. The location was in Algarve near the beach of Pera, in a lake right behind the sand dunes.
I was guessing there was going to be a beautiful sunset so, as I was leaving the beach, I picked up my tripod from the car and headed to the lake. Soon I witnessed one of the most beautiful red, blazing skies I had ever seen! The clouds were on fire and the reflection in the water surface was amazing.
I looked for the best angle to take a few shots, with the HDR image in mind. I didn't have much time because the Sun was going down fast, so probably this was not the perfect point of view. Even so, I managed to compose the scene with some foreground texture to add interest and a sense of perspective to the image.
After merging the 4 exposures in Photomatix, I opened the resulting HDR in Photoshop to correct the lens distortion and add a boost in contrast.

Este grupo de 4 exposições foi tirado nas minhas últimas férias de Verão, em Agosto de 2008, no Algarve, perto da praia de Pera num lago que se encontra mesmo atrás das dunas.
Eu já estava a prever que ía estar um belo por-do-Sol, por isso, quando saí da praia, peguei no tripé que tinha no carro e dirigi-me para o lago. Pouco depois assisti a um dos mais espectaculares céus que tinha visto até então: De um vermelho fogo tão intenso que parecia que as nuvens estavam a arder. E o seu reflexo no lago era incrível! Procurei o melhor ângulo para tirar algumas fotos, já com o HDR em mente. Não tinha muito tempo porque o Sol depressa se escondia mais e por isso, provavelmente, este não era o melhor ponto de vista. Mesmo assim, procurei incluir na composição um pouco da textura do chão no primeiro plano para dar interesse e uma noção de perspectiva à imagem.
Depois de combinar as 4 exposições no Photomatix, abri o HDR resultante no Photoshop para corrigir a distorção e aumentar o contraste.

Before-After 04 - Our old turntable

This turntable belongs to my family for ages! It was my father's toy in his Hi-Fi Geek period. Now he has a better one and this one is in my house, collecting dust.
Recently, when I was home cleaning, I decided to to take some photos of it and work them on Photoshop. Cleaning can wait...

Este gira-discos pertence à família há décadas! Era o brinquedo preferido do meu pai quando ele era maluquinho pela alta-fidelidade. Agora que tem um melhor, este está em minha casa a acumular pó. Um dia destes, eu estava em arrumações domésticas e decidi tirar-lhe umas fotos e trabalha-las no Photoshop. As arrumações podem esperar...

Composites 04 - Bad weather turns good

This image is quite popular in the sites where it is available for download. It's been there for about two years now and as it is composed with a few other photos, I decided to post it here.
The zipper photo is from a cheap backpack that had a huge zipper; The blue sky and ocean on the right are a winner composite that I use in some images, like I did in the one in this other post ; The ocean photo in the left is just another snapshot I took in a beach nearby.
The final composite was achieved by carefully selecting and isolating the zipper and then, adding the other photos with the help of the Photoshop masks.

"Abrindo o fecho, o mau tempo torna-se bom". Esta imagem é bastante popular nos sites onde está disponível para download. Já existe há uns 2 anos e como é composta por várias outras fotos, decidi publicá-la aqui. O fecho de correr pertence a uma mochila barata que tinha um fecho enorme atrás; O céu azul e o mar à direita constituem uma composição de sucesso que uso em várias outras imagens como esta que publiquei neste post; A foto do oceano à esquerda foi captada numa praia aqui por perto. O compósito final foi conseguido por cuidadosamente seleccionar e isolar o fecho e depois, adicionar as outras imagens com a ajuda das máscaras no Photoshop.

Before-After 03 - Sunset at the marina

I was post-processing some photos to submit to the microstock sites and kind of liked the end result of this one.
Many times when I edit the images I'm not looking for a more or less realistic appearance. I pretend a visual impact and that may not be compatible with the reality of Nature.
In this case I've pushed the levels and curves to increase contrast, added a orange coloration to the sky and finally, I set the white balance to a warmer tone to fit the sunset light.

Na noite passada, estava a tratar imagens para submeter para os sites de microstock e acabei por gostar bastande to resultado final desta.
Muitas vezes, quando edito imagens, não procuro um aspecto mais ou menos realista, mas sim algum impacto visual e isso pode não corresponder ao que se vê na realidade na Natureza.
Neste caso, forcei um pouco os níveis e curvas para aumentar o contraste, adicionei uma cor alaranjada ao céu e, finalmente, ajustei o balanço de brancos para um tom mais quente, de acordo com a luz do pôr-do-sol.
