Before-After 09 - Memories of Grandpa's House

This is a typical rural house from the Alentejo region in Portugal! Not that they are all this small, this is rather an attempt to reproduce in a little model, the average house of that region, with the vine tree producing a pleasant shade and the bench where the elderly people likes to spend the hot summer days.
All these ancient houses of Alentejo have this colored band at the bottom and all around them. They might be yellow or blue, and the rest of the walls are painted white, traditionally with quicklime.
This could well be part of someone's memory of childhood, like the grandfather's house where he once lived and grow up.
In post-process, I tried to give the look of the vintage color photos of the 1950s. After removing unwanted objects and restoring the bench, I tweaked the channels to achieve this yellowish tone and added a vignette. I also placed in the foreground a vine branch from other photo, to add to the composition and give depth to the scene.

"Memórias da Casa do Avô".
Esta é uma casa rural típica do Alentejo. Não que sejam todas assim tão pequenas como esta. É antes, uma tentativa de reproduzir num modelo pequeno a casa tradicional da região, com a parreira que fornece uma agradável sombra e o banco onde os mais velhos gostam de passar os dias quentes de Verão.
Todas estas casas antigas do Alentejo têm esta faixa colorida, junto à base e a toda a volta delas. Podem ser amarelas ou azuis, e o resto da parede é pitadas de branco, tradicionalmente com cal.
Esta casa podia muito bem fazer parte das memórias de criança de alguém, como a casa do avô, onde viveu e cresceu.
Na edição, tentei dar o aspecto que as antigas fotos dos anos 50 tinham. Depois de remover objectos indesejados e de restaurar o banco, ajustei os canais de cor para chegar a esta tonalidade amarelada e adicionei vinhetagem aos cantos. Também coloquei no primeiro plano um ramo de vinha de outra foto, para ajudar à composição e conferir profundidade à cena.

Composite 10 - four out of one

Now that the Summer is almost there and the days start to get warmer, who can resist the temptation to have one of these tasty ice creams? What flavor do you want? Strawberry or Pineapple? Raspberry? Orange maybe? Choose at will!
As I only had one, I took some photos of it on top of a yogurt glass jar against a white background so it could be easily extracted. In Photoshop I used the cloning tool to correct some imperfections in the ice particles and applied the liquify tool to improve the shape of the ice cream wherever it was needed. To change the colors, I used the selective colors modifier.
A blurred sky gives the illusion of limited depth of field. The reflection is a duplicate of the layer, flipped upside down, with 25% oppacity and some wave distortion filter to simulate a wet surface.
Yummy! Some indulgence, these ice creams, right?!

"Quatro a Partir de Um".
Agora que o Verão está a chegar e os dias começam a ficar mais quentes, quem consegue resistir à tentação de provar um destes deliciosos gelados? Que sabor preferem? Morango ou ananás? Franboesa? Ou talvez Laranja? É só escolher!
Como só tinha um, tirei-lhe umas fotografias em cima de um boião de iogurte sobre uma superfície branca para facilitar o seu recorte. No Photoshop, usei a ferramenta de "cloning" para corrigir algumas imperfeições nas partículas de gelo e apliquei "liquify" para melhorar a forma do gelado onde era necessário. Para alterar as cores, usei o "selective colors". Um céu desfocado no plano de fundo dá a ilusão de profundidade de campo limitada. O reflexo é uma cópia da layer dos gelados, invertida, com uma opacidade de 25% e um pouco de distorção feita com o filtro "distort>wave" para simular uma superfície molhada.
Nham nham! Estes gelados são ou não são uma tentação, heim?!

Composite 09 - Surf Dude?

Naaa... Not quite. He wish he was that cool! This is my nephew. He's more into "Magic The Gathering" and the closest he has been to a board was with his fingers in a tiny Tech Deck skateboard. He wouldn't hang in a surfboard for 2 seconds! :-D
Browsing older photos in my hard-drive, I found this portrait of him that I took last year. I decided to work a bit on it and added a nice cloudy sky. Then I thought: "He looks like a surfer with that long, wet blond hair. What if I add that surfboard that I snapped in that beach last month?..."
He liked the final image so much that it is now on his Hi5 profile.

"Será Surfista?".
Naaa... nem por isso. Isso gostava ele de ter essa pinta! Este é o meu sobrinho. A onda dele é mais "Magic The Gathering" e o mais perto que esteve de uma prancha foi com os dedinhos num minúsculo skateboard da Tech Deck. Ele não se aguentava 2 segundos numa prancha de surf! :-D
Estava a rever fotos mais antigas no meu disco-rígido e encontrei este retrato dele que tirei no ano passado. Decidi trabalha-lo um pouco e adicionei um belo céu com nuvens. Então pensei: "Ele parece mesmo um surfista com aquele cabelo comprido e louro todo molhado. E se eu adicionasse a foto da prancha de surf que tirei naquela praia no mês passado?..."
Ele gostou tanto da imagem final que até a definiu como foto de perfil do seu Hi5.

Before-After 08 - Sundown in Carcavelos Beach

Recently I went for a walk along Carcavelos beach, located nearby my home. At this spot there is a beach bar/street café called "Bar dos Gémeos" (Twins Bar) that is runned by two twin brothers. I'm a regular customer on Sundays for lunch, throughout the year. This bar faces the ocean and was behind me at this time. These planks in the foreground are a dog parking, a shade for dog owners to leave their pets when they go to the beach. There is water for the animals and plastic bags to pick up their... erm... reliefs. In the Summer, we can find a hanger with empty soda cans opened on top, that one can take to the beach and use as an ashtray. All this has been set up by the twin brothers, that not only take care of their business at the bar, but also try to keep the beach clean and make people aware of the environment, promoting proper practices on its behalf.
It's a nice Bar and a nice beach and I can't wait for Summer to arrive!
This image was processed twice in Photoshop: One for the top half, other for the bottom half. Then I blended the two together and ajusted contrast and color.

"Pôr do Sol na praia de Carcavelos".
Num destes dias fui dar um passeio ao longo da praia de Carcavelos, perto da minha casa. Neste local existe um Bar/esplanada chamado "Bar dos Gémeos" que é gerido por dois irmãos gémeos. Sou um cliente habitual aos Domingos para almoçar, ao longo de todo o ano. Este bar está virado para o oceano e neste momento estava por trás de mim. Estas tábuas no primeiro plano são um "estacionamento" para cães, uma sombra para os seus donos deixarem os fiéis amigos enquanto disfrutam da praia! Existe lá àgua para os animais e sacos de plástico para apanhar os... digamos... seus alívios. No Verão, existe umas pendurezas com latas de refrigerantes vazias, abertas no topo, que se levam para a praia para servir como cinzeiro. Tudo isto foi disponibilizado pelos gémeos, que não só cuidam do seu negócio do bar, mas também tentam manter a praia limpa promovendo práticas no sentido da defesa do ambiente.
É uma boa praia e um bar simpático e mal posso esperar pela chegada do Verão!
Esta imagem foi processada duas vezes no Photoshop: Uma para a metade do topo, outra para a metade inferior. Depois fundi as duas e ajustei o contraste e a cor.

HDR 05 - Belver Train Station

This set of 5 exposures was captured about a week ago.
I went out with a group for a one day train trip to an ancient village called Belver in the Alentejo region in Portugal. It's a beautiful location, in the margins of River Tagus, about 200 Km to North-east of Lisbon. It has a medieval castle on the top of a high hill and many white houses down the hill to the river valley, where the train station is located. After a pleasant day visiting the village and taking photos, I took this last set of exposures while waiting for the train to take me back home.
Back at home, I merged the shots in Photomatix, then I opened the resulting HDR in Photoshop to improve tones and contrast.

"Estação de Comboios de Belver". Este grupo de 5 exposições foi captado há cerca de uma semana.
Saí com um grupo para uma viagem de comboio de um dia, ida e volta, à velha vila de Belver no Alto Alentejo. É uma bela localidade nas margens do rio Tejo, a uns 200 Km a Nordeste de Lisboa. Tem um castelo medieval no topo de uma colina e muitas casas brancas que descem a colina até ao vale do rio, onde está situada a estação de comboios. Depois de um dia bem passado a visitar a vila e a tirar fotografias, tirei este último grupo de exposições na estação enquanto esperava o comboio para a viagem de regresso a casa.
De volta a casa, combinei as 5 fotos no Photomatix, depois abri o HDR resultante no Photoshop para melhorar os tons e o contraste.

Composite 08 - A Welcome to Spring

Composite 07 - Easter Eggs Rain

Easter is almost there so, because it has all to do with loads of candies and happy children, I decided to create this colorful composite.
It took only two photos: One of the smiling girl shrugging shoulders and one of a single chicken egg. In photoshop, I selected and isolated the egg and painted it differently several times. Then, I did the same selection and isolation to the child's photo, placed it on a gradient background and finally, I composed the falling eggs and applied a bit of motion blur to give a sense of movement.
This image was selected by Shutterstock to appear in the Easter Lightbox and is selling very well, having reached the weekly TOP 50 of photos last week! HAPPY EASTER!!

"Chuva de Ovos de Páscoa".
A Páscoa está à porta e, porque tem tudo a ver com montes de guloseimas e crianças felizes, eu decidi criar este compósito colorido.
Só foram precisas duas fotos: Uma da criança sorridente a encolher os ombros e uma de um único ovo de galinha. No photoshop, seleccionei e isolei o ovo e pintei-o com motivos diferentes várias vezes. Depois, seleccionei e isolei igualmente a foto da criança e coloquei-a num fundo gradiente e, finalmente, compuz os ovos a cair e apliquei um pouco de motion blur para lhes dar um aspecto de movimento.
Esta imagem foi seleccionada pelo Shutterstock para figurar na "Lightbox" (selecção de imagens temáticas) sobre a Páscoa e está a ter bastante sucesso, tendo inclusivamente chegado ao TOP 50 de fotos na semana passada! BOA PÁSCOA!!

HDR 04 - Rosario's Beach Old Pier

This set of 4 exposures was captured in February 22nd.
I went out for the whole day with some friends to discover photographic spots. One of them knew this area and in the late afternoon we decided to go there before we call it a day.
The place is a beach, Rosario's Beach, in the south coast of Tagus river estuary, at about 20 Km away from Lisbon, Portugal. The Sun was about to disappear behind the horizon. The tide was very low and this old pier looked great standing in the sticky mud, against a golden sunset sky. The time was short to go and grab my tripod in the car, so I got my feet in the mud and took these exposures with the camera handheld.
Back at home, I merged the shots in Photomatix, then I opened the resulting HDR in Photoshop to improve tones and contrast.

"O Velho Cais da Praia do Rosário".
Este grupo de 4 exposições foi tirado no dia 22 de Fevereiro.
Saí o dia inteiro com uns amigos para procurar locais para fotografar. Um deles conhecia esta àrea e então, decidimos lá ir ao anoitecer, antes de regressar a casa.
O lugar é uma praia na margem sul do estuário do rio Tejo, a praia do Rosário, a uns 20 Km de Lisboa. O Sol estava prestes a desaparecer no horizonte. A maré estava muito baixa e este velho cais, apoiado naquela lama pegajosa, ficava muito bem contra o céu dourado do pôr-do-Sol. Eu não tinha tempo para ir buscar o tripé ao carro, por isso, meti os pés na lama e tirei estas exposições com a máquina nas mãos.
De volta a casa, combinei a 4 fotos no Photomatix, depois abri o HDR resultante no Photoshop para melhorar os tons e o contraste.

Composite 06 - Global Financial Headache...

...Is all around us. Every day we watch the news, there's always one more company closing doors, contributing to the raising of unemployment. Tens or hundreds of workers, suddenly find themselves with no work, no revenue and no solution in sight. But the bills to pay will always be there, every month. They find no sympathy. Mortgage, car loan, phone, cable TV, Internet, gas, electricity, water, insurance, supermarket, kids education,... And we count our pennies and we wish they were made of rubber so that they could stretch. But they are not and we have to think how we get through! So we get this terrible headache...
For this image, I made the paper sheets in 3D and everything else is Photoshop work.

"Dor de Cabeça da Crise Financeira Global"... Está em todo o lado. Todos os dias assistimos nos noticiários a mais uma empresa a fechar as portas, contribuindo para o aumento do desemprego. Dezenas ou centenas de trabalhadores vêem-se de repente sem trabalho, sem rendimentos e sem uma solução rápida à vista. Mas as contas para pagar aparecem sempre, todos os mêses, insensíveis. Hipoteca da casa, crédito do carro, telefone, TV cabo, Internet, gás. eléctricidade, àgua, seguros, supermercado, a educação dos miúdos,... E contamos os tostões e desejamos que fossem feitos de borracha, para esticarem e darem para tudo... Mas não são e temos que pensar na melhor forma de nos safarmos! E então, aparece-nos está terrível dor de cabeça...
Para esta imagem, fiz as folhas de papel em 3D. Tudo o resto foi trabalhado no Photoshop.

Before-After 07 - It's time! Wake up!!

Is there anyone who enjoys being woken up like this? When you're peacefully sleeping in the most absolute silence, and suddenly,... Your heart jumps to your mouth, your whole body jumps 5cm from the mattress, your hair gets erected like wire and you wish you had a hammer to smash that thing down for good!...
I never really liked these devices. And 7 am is so early! Thankfully now we have digital alarm clocks with radio. We can set them to start the radio at any time with a sweet soft music in the lowest volume of the sound. The only problem is that in fact you might not wake up to enjoy the music but on the other hand you will live longer and with a healthy heart.
In this image, I isolated the clock in white background and, to create the sense of vibration, I applied a bit of motion blur and adjusted the layer opacity.

"Está na hora! Toca a acordar!!". Será que existe alguém que goste de acordar assim? Quando está descansada e profundamente a dormir, em silêncio absoluto e de repente,... O coração salta até à boca, todo o corpo dá um pulo de 5cm acima do colchão, o cabelo espeta-se como arame e desejamos ter ali à mão um martelo para espatifar aquela coisa de vez!...
Eu nunca gostei destes aparelhos. E 7 da manhã é cedíssimo! Ainda bem que agora temos despertadores digitais com rádio. Podemos escolher acordar com o rádio a qualquer hora, com uma música doce e suave e com o volume do som bem baixinho. O único problema é que de facto poderemos não acordar para apreciar a melodia, mas em contrapartida, viveremos mais anos e com um coração saudável.
Nesta imagem, isolei o relógio em fundo branco e, para criar a noção de vibração apliquei o filtro "motion blur" e ajustei a opacidade da camada.
