HDR 06 - A5 in a Rush Hour

This set of 5 exposures was captured last Friday, July 3 at about 8:45pm.
It shows the office buildings in Miraflores, in the surroundings of Lisbon, and highway A5 that links the capital city to Cascais. There's a recently built bridge over the highway, in a perfect spot overlooking these office buildings that gets all lighten up with colorful neons and the company's logos as the Sun goes down and the twilight settles in. At this time, the rush our is almost over and there isn't as much cars getting back home after a working day as there were a couple of hours earlier, still, enough for me to get some speeding light trails.
I had this shots planned for quite some time to upload to Microstock sites and finally I had the opportunity to take them. I used my tripod and a 17-70 zoom in my Pentax K10D. After setting the tilted composition, I chose the WB and aperture and took these five images with different EV stops (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). After about 30 other shots I went home to see them in the computer and only then I realized that I had forgotten to set the ISO to 100. It stayed in Auto mode and all the images got ISO 400 and to much noise for stock standards. Now I have to go back there again and do things right!! Anyway, I picked this set and played a little with Photomatix and got this final HDR. Here is it's location in Google Maps.

"A5 Em Hora De Ponta". Este grupo de 5 exposições foi captado no dia 3 de Julho, às 20:45H.
Vê-se os edifícios de escritórios de Miraflores, nos arredores de Lisboa e a auto-estrada A5 que liga a capital a Cascais. Existe agora ali uma ponte, recentemente construída, que atravessa a auto-estrada num local perfeito, com vista para estes edifícios que se iluminam todos com neons coloridos e com os logotipos das empresas, à medida que a luz do Sol desce e o lusco-fusco se instala. Nesta altura a hora de ponta está quase no fim e não existem tantos carros de regresso a casa depois de um dia de trabalho como haviam há duas horas atrás, mas mesmo assim, existem os suficientes para conseguir captar uns bons rastos de luz dos seus faróis.
Já tinha estas imagens planeadas há alguns tempo para enviar para os sites de Microstock e finalmente tive a oportunidade de as tirar. Usei o meu tripé e um zoom 17-70 na minha Pentax K10D. Depois de definir a composição inclinada, escolhi o balanço de brancos e a abertura e tirei estas 5 imagens com valores EV diferentes (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). Depois de cerca de 30 outros disparos, fui para casa para os ver no computador e só então me apercebi de que me tinha esquecido de mudar o ISO para 100. Ficou em Auto ISO e a todas as imagens foi atribuido ISO 400 e, por isso, com ruído a mais para o que é aceitável em sites stock. Agora tenho que lá voltar e fazer as coisa como deve ser!! De qualquer forma, peguei nestas 5 imagens, brinquei com elas no Photomatix e o resultado foi este HDR. Aqui está a localização nos mapas Google.

Before-After 12 - The "Alter Real" Horses

In a recent visit to Alter do Chão, a village in the Alentejo region of Portugal, I went to see the breeding of the Alter Real horses. It's a "must se" to anyone visiting the region.
These horses are portuguese and closely related to the Lusitano breed. During the day, large herds stay freely outside pasturing in the abundant green fields of the "Coudelaria de Alter", the place where they are grown. To know more about the Alter Real horses follow this link.

"Os Cavalos Alter Real". Numa visita recente a Alter do Chão, uma vila no Alto Alentejo, fui ver a criação de cavalos Alter Real. É visita obrigatória para quem se encontra na região.
Estes cavalos são portugueses e derivados da raça Lusitana. Durante o dia, grandes manadas pastam livremente nos abundates e verdejantes campos da "Coudelaria de Alter", o local onde são criados. Para saber mais sobre os cavalos Alter Real, clique neste link.

Before-After 11 - Nighttime Beach Tune

I often go for a early morning walk in the beach to get my much needed coffee in a local beach bar. I sit outside for a few minutes watching the waves and deeply breathing the fresh air from the sea. This time the air brought me the sound of music playing nearby. I went to look for its origin and saw this guy sitting in the sand playing his guitar and singing some actual radio hit. He was perfectly in the center of two rows of rustic sunshades. It was about 9am and the morning was bright but the sky was covered with clouds. I took the shot and while I was reviewing it in the camera screen, I thought it would be great if it was a night scene. So, at home, with Photoshop, I tried to "convert" this daylight photo into a nighttime scene with some surreal looks. I did some experiences but this version is the one that got nearer the pretended result.
To achieve it, I selectively edited the sky, sea and foreground with curves and levels to drastically increase contrast and darken the scene. Then I decreased saturation because at night there's almost an absence of color. Only the man has a little more color and brightness to draw attention to him.

"Balada Nocturna na Praia". Eu vou regularmente dar um passeio matinal à praia para tomar o meu indispensável café num dos bares locais. Sento-me na esplanada por alguns minutos a apreciar as ondas e a inspirar profundamente o ar fresco vindo do mar. Desta vez, o ar também me trouxe o som de música a tocar nas proximidades. Fui à procura da origem do som e vi este rapaz sentado na areia, a tocar a sua guitarra e a cantar um qualquer êxito actual. Ele estava perfeitamente centrado entre duas filas de uns rústicos chapéus de sol. Eram cerca das 9 horas de uma manhã luminosa mas o céu estava coberto de nuvens. Tirei a foto e, enquanto a revia no ecrã da máquina, pensei que aquela seria uma boa imagem se tivesse sido captada de noite. Assim, em casa com o Photoshop, tentei converter esta foto tirada de dia, numa cena nocturna com um ar algo surreal. Fiz algumas experiências mas esta versão foi a que me pareceu mais aproximada ao resultado pretendido.
Para o conseguir, editei selectivamente o céu, mar e primeiro plano com as ferramentas "curves" e "levels" para drasticamente aumentar o contraste e escurecer a cena. Depois reduzi a saturação porque de noite existe uma quase ausencia de cor. só o rapaz é que tem um pouco mais de cor e luminosidade para atrair o olhar para ele.

Before-After 10 - Irresistible Strawberry

One of these days I had a pleasant visitor. My cousin Cris came by to have lunch with us. By this time she was in the kitchen preparing some strawberries for dessert and I immediatly had the idea of the shot. I asked her to pick a big red strawberry and to come closer to the window to get the best light possible. Then, I asked her to pretend she was about to bite the fruit. I took a handful of shots without bothering about the messy background. This means more editing to do in Photoshop.
She ended up devouring the tasty strawberry. Who wouldn't?

"Morango Irresistível". Um destes dias tive uma agradável visita. A minha prima Cris apareceu para almoçar connosco. Nesta altura ela estava na cozinha a preparar uns morangos para a sobremesa e eu imediatamente tive a ideia da fotografia. Pedi-lhe que escolhesse um morango grande e vermelhão e que se chegasse perto da janela para aproveitar a melhor luz possível. Depois, pedi-lhe para fingir que ía morder o fruto. Tirei algumas fotos sem me importar com o fundo confuso por trás dela. Isto quer dizer mais trabalho de edição no Photoshop.
Ela acabou por devorar o delicioso morango. Quem não o faria?

Before-After 09 - Memories of Grandpa's House

This is a typical rural house from the Alentejo region in Portugal! Not that they are all this small, this is rather an attempt to reproduce in a little model, the average house of that region, with the vine tree producing a pleasant shade and the bench where the elderly people likes to spend the hot summer days.
All these ancient houses of Alentejo have this colored band at the bottom and all around them. They might be yellow or blue, and the rest of the walls are painted white, traditionally with quicklime.
This could well be part of someone's memory of childhood, like the grandfather's house where he once lived and grow up.
In post-process, I tried to give the look of the vintage color photos of the 1950s. After removing unwanted objects and restoring the bench, I tweaked the channels to achieve this yellowish tone and added a vignette. I also placed in the foreground a vine branch from other photo, to add to the composition and give depth to the scene.

"Memórias da Casa do Avô".
Esta é uma casa rural típica do Alentejo. Não que sejam todas assim tão pequenas como esta. É antes, uma tentativa de reproduzir num modelo pequeno a casa tradicional da região, com a parreira que fornece uma agradável sombra e o banco onde os mais velhos gostam de passar os dias quentes de Verão.
Todas estas casas antigas do Alentejo têm esta faixa colorida, junto à base e a toda a volta delas. Podem ser amarelas ou azuis, e o resto da parede é pitadas de branco, tradicionalmente com cal.
Esta casa podia muito bem fazer parte das memórias de criança de alguém, como a casa do avô, onde viveu e cresceu.
Na edição, tentei dar o aspecto que as antigas fotos dos anos 50 tinham. Depois de remover objectos indesejados e de restaurar o banco, ajustei os canais de cor para chegar a esta tonalidade amarelada e adicionei vinhetagem aos cantos. Também coloquei no primeiro plano um ramo de vinha de outra foto, para ajudar à composição e conferir profundidade à cena.

Composite 10 - four out of one

Now that the Summer is almost there and the days start to get warmer, who can resist the temptation to have one of these tasty ice creams? What flavor do you want? Strawberry or Pineapple? Raspberry? Orange maybe? Choose at will!
As I only had one, I took some photos of it on top of a yogurt glass jar against a white background so it could be easily extracted. In Photoshop I used the cloning tool to correct some imperfections in the ice particles and applied the liquify tool to improve the shape of the ice cream wherever it was needed. To change the colors, I used the selective colors modifier.
A blurred sky gives the illusion of limited depth of field. The reflection is a duplicate of the layer, flipped upside down, with 25% oppacity and some wave distortion filter to simulate a wet surface.
Yummy! Some indulgence, these ice creams, right?!

"Quatro a Partir de Um".
Agora que o Verão está a chegar e os dias começam a ficar mais quentes, quem consegue resistir à tentação de provar um destes deliciosos gelados? Que sabor preferem? Morango ou ananás? Franboesa? Ou talvez Laranja? É só escolher!
Como só tinha um, tirei-lhe umas fotografias em cima de um boião de iogurte sobre uma superfície branca para facilitar o seu recorte. No Photoshop, usei a ferramenta de "cloning" para corrigir algumas imperfeições nas partículas de gelo e apliquei "liquify" para melhorar a forma do gelado onde era necessário. Para alterar as cores, usei o "selective colors". Um céu desfocado no plano de fundo dá a ilusão de profundidade de campo limitada. O reflexo é uma cópia da layer dos gelados, invertida, com uma opacidade de 25% e um pouco de distorção feita com o filtro "distort>wave" para simular uma superfície molhada.
Nham nham! Estes gelados são ou não são uma tentação, heim?!

Composite 09 - Surf Dude?

Naaa... Not quite. He wish he was that cool! This is my nephew. He's more into "Magic The Gathering" and the closest he has been to a board was with his fingers in a tiny Tech Deck skateboard. He wouldn't hang in a surfboard for 2 seconds! :-D
Browsing older photos in my hard-drive, I found this portrait of him that I took last year. I decided to work a bit on it and added a nice cloudy sky. Then I thought: "He looks like a surfer with that long, wet blond hair. What if I add that surfboard that I snapped in that beach last month?..."
He liked the final image so much that it is now on his Hi5 profile.

"Será Surfista?".
Naaa... nem por isso. Isso gostava ele de ter essa pinta! Este é o meu sobrinho. A onda dele é mais "Magic The Gathering" e o mais perto que esteve de uma prancha foi com os dedinhos num minúsculo skateboard da Tech Deck. Ele não se aguentava 2 segundos numa prancha de surf! :-D
Estava a rever fotos mais antigas no meu disco-rígido e encontrei este retrato dele que tirei no ano passado. Decidi trabalha-lo um pouco e adicionei um belo céu com nuvens. Então pensei: "Ele parece mesmo um surfista com aquele cabelo comprido e louro todo molhado. E se eu adicionasse a foto da prancha de surf que tirei naquela praia no mês passado?..."
Ele gostou tanto da imagem final que até a definiu como foto de perfil do seu Hi5.
