Before-After 19 - Thermal Power Plant of Sines

This photo of the Power Plant of Sines was captured in the afternoon of a Summer day, in last September. The weather was hot and the light was harsh, with a blue cast veiling the landscape. Even so, I decided to pull over in the highway and take some photos with my 70-200 zoom supported by the side window of my car. I was passing by the area, with no time to tour around to find a better point-of-view and I didn't know if I was going to have another opportunity to go back there soon after that day. So I took the shot... and it has been sitting in my hard drive for three months.
A couple of days ago I opened it in Photoshop to see if I could make that image a little more pleasant to the sight.
Basically, what I did was controlling each color with "adjustments > selective colors" tool, fine-tune saturation and contrast, clone out the crane (can you see where it was?), and add a nice cloud from a photo of my image collection of skies, to balance the composition.
Although a little surreal, I like this version better. :-)

"Estação Termoeléctrica de Sines". Esta foto da Estação Termoeléctrica de Sines foi captada na tarde de um dia de verão, em Setembro último. O tempo estava quente e a luz era dura, com uma dominante azulada a velar a paisagem. Mesmo assim, decidi encostar e parar na via-rápida para tirar umas fotos, com o meu zoom 70-200 apoiado na janela do carro. Eu estava de passagem naquela zona, sem tempo para dar umas voltas por ali para procurar um melhor ponto de vista e não sabia se teria uma oportunidade de ali voltar em breve depois daquele dia. Assim, tirei a foto... e assim tem estado, abandonada, no disco-rígido do meu computador há três mêses.
Há uns dias, abri-a no Photoshop para ver se conseguia torná-la um pouco mais agradável à vista.
Basicamente, o que fiz foi controlar cada cor com a ferramenta "adjustments > selective colors", afinar a saturação e contraste, eliminar o guindaste (conseguem ver onde estava?), e adicionar uma bela nuvem, tirada de uma foto da minha colecção de imagens de céus, para equilibrar a composição. Apesar de um pouco surreal, gosto mais desta versão. :-)

Before-After 18 - From 1945 to a New Life

I was asked by a relative to restore an old portrait of his aunt. She passed away a few years ago and he wanted to have a bigger and renewed version of this photo, a little 2 x 1,3 inches passport type photo, for which he didn't have the negative. It was in pretty bad shape but fortunately the bad areas were not on the eyes or mouth, so I didn't have to guess how they were originally. In the end, we were both happy with the result.
The photo was taken in 1945 and by that time she was 20 years old.

"De 1945 Para uma Nova Vida".
Um parente pediu-me para recuperar um velho retrato da sua tia. Ela faleceu há alguns anos e ele queria uma versão maior e renovada desta pequena foto tipo passe de 4,5 x 3cm, da qual não tinha o negativo. Estava em bastante mau estado mas felizmente as àreas mais afectadas não eram nos olhos ou boca e assim não tive que improvisar quanto ao aspecto que teriam originalmente. No final, ficámos ambos satisfeitos com o resultado.
A fotografia data de 1945 e a retratada tinha então 20 anos de idade.

Before-After 17 - Fall Colors in the Woods

It started a foggy day in the woods of the mountain range of Sintra and it was nice to be able to capture the mystic, peaceful mood of that scenery where there's no one to be seen for hours. It's just you and the immense Nature all around.
As the time was passing, the fog got replaced by the sunlight penetrating through the trees. I did some trekking with my photo gear load, looking for the bright colors of Fall but I guess that mid October is too early for that. The vivid yellows were unfortunately absent, so, at home I added some Photoshop magic to the photos and created what I was looking for from the beginning.

"Cores de Outono no Bosque". O dia começou com algum nevoeiro nos bosques da Serra de Sintra e foi bom ter a oportunidade de captar o ambiente místico e tranquilo daquela paisagem, onde não passa ninguém durante horas. Somos só nós e a imensa Natureza à nossa volta.
O tempo ía passando e o nevoeiro foi substituído pela luz do Sol penetranto entre as àrvores. Fiz uma caminhada, carregado com o meu material fotográfico, à procura das cores vivas do Outono mas creio que o meio de Outubro é demasiado cedo para isso. Os amarelos vivos estavam, infelizmente, ainda ausentes. Por isso, em casa, adicionei um pouco de magia do Photoshop às fotos e criei o que andava à procura desde o início.
Não se equeçam de passar o ponteiro do rato por cima das imagens para ver as originais.

Before-After 16 - Vintage Notebook

Here I was playing around with this craft paper background that I brought home the other day. Looking for objects to place over it and photograph, I found this nice notebook with an old-fashioned look and thought it would make a good setup with the help of a pencil from IKEA :-)
I lifted the left side and kept it in that position with the help of a eraser placed behind it. I forced the curl on the upper right corner and carefully placed the pencil in its position. As usual, the light is from a window on the left and I placed a reflector on the right to fill the shadows a bit and lit the left page. Then, I took a few shots with my camera on the tripod.
It was only when I was editing the selected photo in Photoshop that I noticed that the notebook was upside-down!! As can be seen in the original photo, there's a larger part of the pages without printed lines at the bottom, that were supposed to be on top. Flipping the image wouldn't work visually so, I decided to draw the missing lines, so that one doesn't know which side is the upper :-D
I'm happy with the finished image. What do you think?

"Bloco de Notas Antigo". Aqui estava eu às voltas com um fundo de papel decorativo que trouxe para casa um dia destes. À procura de objectos para colocar sobre ele e fotografar, encontrei este bloco de notas de estilo antigo e pensei que faria um bom conjunto, com a ajuda de um pequeno lápis da IKEA :-)
Levantei o lado esquerdo do bloco e mantive-o nessa posição com a ajuda de uma borracha que coloquei por detrás da capa. Dobrei o canto superior direito da folha em caracol e coloquei cuidadosamente o lápis na posição certa. Como de costume, a luz é proveniente de uma janela no lado esquerdo e coloquei um reflector do lado direito para "encher" um pouco as sombras e iluminar a página esquerda. De seguida, tirei umas fotos com a câmera no tripé.
Foi só quando já estava a editar a imagem escolhida no Photoshop que reparei que o bloco estava de pernas-para-o-ar!! Como pode ser visto na imagem original, há uma parte grande das folhas sem linhas impressas, em baixo, que era suposto estar no topo. Rodar a imagem não iria resultar visualmente, por isso decidi desenhar as linhas em falta, para que não se perceba qual dos lados é o de cima :-D
Gostei do resultado final da imagem. O que acham?

Composite 13 - Flying Off The Monitor

This is my new laptop. I went camping last summer and took it with me, so that the detachment from technology in general and Photoshop in particular wouldn't be too abrupt. ;)
One day I was sitting outside, setting up the computer and I decided to take a shot of it, without giving much thought about what to do with the image afterward. The laptop was evenly lit with the natural light and I didn't care about the reflections in the monitor. I placed my camera in the tripod and fired a few shots using the self timer.
One month later, at home, I opened one of the images in Photoshop and started to sweep it: Levels, curves, brightness, contrast, saturation, desaturation, burn, dodge, clone, heal... well, all the usual steps of my post-processing. Then I start choosing some other older photos, previously edited, - some of them have been published here in the past months - to place them in the monitor of the laptop, in the way you see above, to finish the composition. I hope you like it!

"Voando Para Fora do Monitor". Este é o meu novo portátil. Fui acampar este verão e levei-o comigo, para que o afastamento da tecnologia em geral e do Photoshop em particular não fosse demasiado brusco. ;)
Um dia, estava sentado cá fora, a configurar o computador e decidi tirar-lhe um retrato, sem pensar muito sobre o que fazer depois com a imagem. O portátil estava iluminado homogeneamente com a luz natural e eu não me preocupei com os reflexos no monitor. Coloquei a câmara no tripé e fiz alguns disparos utilizando o "self timer".
Um mês depois, em casa, abri uma das imagens no Photoshop e comecei a "varrê-la": Levels, curves, brightness, contrast, saturation, desaturation, burn, dodge, clone, heal... Bem, os passos do costume na minha pós-produção de imagens. Comecei então por escolher algumas fotos mais antigas, previamente trabalhadas, - algumas já foram aqui publicadas nos últimos mêses - para as montar no monitor do portátil, da maneira que se se vê, para terminar a composição. Espero que gostem!

"Mais Algumas da Carrasqueira". Como disse no último artigo, aqui estão mais algumas imagens da minha visita em Setembro à Carrasqueira. Um "HDR" e dois "Antes & Depois".

HDR 08 - Carrasqueira After Sunset

This set of 5 exposures was captured in September 11th about 15 minutes after Sunset.
The place is the palafitte port of Carrasqueira in the Sado river estuary, near the city of Setúbal, Portugal. It is a very popular spot for photographers. See here it's location in the Google Maps.
You must know what happens when you're in a swampy place like this, at this time of the day... I got heavily attacked by mosquitoes and, being in T-shirt and shorts, I collected a substantial amount of stings. Imagine me, dancing and jumping like crazy, in between the long exposures, to swat off those bugs! Standing in those unstable planks, I had to stay still during the exposures because the images wouldn't come out in sharp focus... That's when they attacked... ouch!...
I spent a few hours there and took tons of photos! I have quite a bunch of them worth editing so, possibly I'll post here more images from the same shoot.
These 5 different exposures (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2) were blended together in Photomatix for the final HDR. More levels, dodge and burn adjustments were applied afterward in Photoshop.

"Carrasqueira depois do Pôr-do-Sol". Este grupo de 5 exposições foi captado no dia 11 de Setembro, 15 minutos depois do Pôr-do-Sol.
O local é o porto palafítico da Carrasqueira, no estuários do Rio Sado, perto de Setúbal. É um sítio muito popular entre os fotógrafos. Veja aqui a sua localização nos Google Maps.
Devem saber o que acontece quando se está num local pantanoso como este, a esta hora do dia... Fui massivamente atacado por melgas e mosquitos e, estando de T-shirt e calções, consegui uma substancial colecção de picadelas. Imaginem-me a dançar e a saltar que nem um louco, entre as longas exposições, para afugentar aqueles bichos danados! Em cima daquelas tábuas instáveis, eu tinha que estar quietinho durante as exposições, ou as imagens não sairiam nítidas... e era aí que eles atacavam...Ui!...
Estive ali durante algumas horas e tirei muitas fotos! Tenho bastantes que merecem ser trabalhadas, por isso é possível que ainda venha a publicar aqui mais alguma do mesmo dia.
Estas 5 exposições (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2) foram combinadas no Photomatix para criar a imagem HDR final. De seguida ajustei com levels, dodge e burn no Photoshop.

For this image, I thought about a "focus-in-your-aspirations-and-goals-even-if-the-path-to-get-there-is-a-long-and-painful-one-but-you-know-that-if-you-stick-to-it-you-soon-will-see-the-light-in-the-horizon" concept. :-)

Composite 11 - Tiger By The River Lima

I decided to recover an old photo montage that was done with a photo that I took in the River Lima, in the north of Portugal, and one of a tiger that I snapped in the Lisbon Zoo some 2 years ago.
The houses in the horizon and the stone road mark are signs of nearby civilization so, a wild tiger peacefully resting in the river shore and near a road is much unlikely to be seen, at least in this part of the globe. And this surreal touch is exactly what makes this image interesting for me. The tweaked colors and the fake fog that I added in the post-production also helped to the final result.

"Tigre no Rio Lima".
Decidi recuperar uma foto-montagem antiga que fiz com uma foto que tirei no Rio Lima e uma outra de um tigre, captada no Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa há uns 2 anos atrás.
As casas no horizonte e o marco de pedra são sinais de civilização, por isso, um tigre selvagem a descansar pacificamente nas margens do rio e junto a uma estrada é muito improvavel de ser visto, pelo menos nesta parte do globo. E para mim, este toque surreal é precisamente o que faz esta imagem interessante. As cores trabalhadas e a adição de um nevoeiro fictício na pós produção também ajudaram para o resultado final.
Qual é a vossa opinião?

Before-After 13 - Only One Will Fit

For this photo I used only a regular 60w desk lamp on the left side and a reflector on the opposite side. I took some photos of the set, with slight variations of the light source position. As can be seen when you rollover, most of the left part of the image is from another shot, that I added into this one to acquire an even lighting of the composition.
I'm sending this image to the Microstock agencies that I work with, so there can not be any recognizable logo or trade mark. It was some task to remove all of them with Photoshop while trying to retain the textures in the keys and padlock!
I pushed the levels and curves to add contrast and increased the color saturation in the padlock. Then, I draw a keyhole shape in Photoshop and used bevel/emboss to blend it in the surface. As a final touch, I darkened the corners to draw attention to the center of the image.

"Só Uma Servirá". Para esta imagem, usei um banal candeeiro de secretária com uma lâmpada de 60w no lado esquerdo e um reflector no lado oposto. Tirei várias fotos da composição, com ligeiras variações da posição da lâmpada. Como se pode ver quando se passa o cursor por cima da imagem, o lado esquerdo é quase todo de outra imagem, que eu apliquei a esta, para adquirir uma iluminação mais uniforme a toda a composição.
Vou enviar esta imagem para as agências de Microstock com as quais trabalho, por isso não podem existir quaisquer logotipos ou marcas registadas visíveis. Deu algum trabalho removê-los todos com o Photoshop, tentando manter as texturas das chaves e do cadeado!
Ajustei os "levels" e "curves" para dar contraste e aumentei a saturação de cor no cadeado. Depois, desenhei um buraco de fechadura com o photoshop e usei "bevel/emboss" para o adaptar à superfície. Como toque final, escureci os cantos para chamar mais a atenção ao centro da imagem.

HDR 07 - Ventilated Toilet Cabin

Hello! It's been over a month since my last post. Thanks for your patience and for returning to PicSweep.
I've just returned from a vacation in a rural location where I found this destroyed toilet cabin near a old house in the countryside. I had passed by it some times before and thought it would be a nice subject for an HDR so, one day I couldn't resist any longer and had to run back there!! Fortunately, it was very well ventilated toilet cabin ;-)
I set my tripod near the ground to have this lower point of view and took 5 different exposures. At home I blended them in Photomatix and added some more dodge and burn in Photoshop.

"Cabine de WC Ventilada".
Olá!. Já passou mais de um mês desde a minha última imagem publicada aqui. Agradeço-vos pela vossa paciência e por voltarem ao PicSweep.
Acabei de regressar de umas férias no Sudoeste Alentejano onde, numa zona rural, encontrei esta cabine de WC destruida perto de uma velha casa de campo. Já tinha passado por ela várias vezes e pensei que podia ser um bom motivo para fotografar e fazer uma experiência em HDR. Por isso, um dia não pude aguentar mais e tive de correr para lá!! Felizmente era muito bem ventilada ;-)
Coloquei o tripé perto do chão para possibilitar este ponto de vista baixo e tirei 5 fotos com tempos de exposição diferentes. Em casa trabalhei-as no Photomatix e apliquei um pouco de "dodge" e "burn" no Photoshop.

HDR 06 - A5 in a Rush Hour

This set of 5 exposures was captured last Friday, July 3 at about 8:45pm.
It shows the office buildings in Miraflores, in the surroundings of Lisbon, and highway A5 that links the capital city to Cascais. There's a recently built bridge over the highway, in a perfect spot overlooking these office buildings that gets all lighten up with colorful neons and the company's logos as the Sun goes down and the twilight settles in. At this time, the rush our is almost over and there isn't as much cars getting back home after a working day as there were a couple of hours earlier, still, enough for me to get some speeding light trails.
I had this shots planned for quite some time to upload to Microstock sites and finally I had the opportunity to take them. I used my tripod and a 17-70 zoom in my Pentax K10D. After setting the tilted composition, I chose the WB and aperture and took these five images with different EV stops (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). After about 30 other shots I went home to see them in the computer and only then I realized that I had forgotten to set the ISO to 100. It stayed in Auto mode and all the images got ISO 400 and to much noise for stock standards. Now I have to go back there again and do things right!! Anyway, I picked this set and played a little with Photomatix and got this final HDR.

"A5 Em Hora De Ponta". Este grupo de 5 exposições foi captado no dia 3 de Julho, às 20:45H.
Vê-se os edifícios de escritórios de Miraflores, nos arredores de Lisboa e a auto-estrada A5 que liga a capital a Cascais. Existe agora ali uma ponte, recentemente construída, que atravessa a auto-estrada num local perfeito, com vista para estes edifícios que se iluminam todos com "neons" coloridos e com os logotipos das empresas, à medida que a luz do Sol desce e o lusco-fusco se instala. Nesta altura a hora de ponta está quase no fim e não existem tantos carros como há duas horas atrás, mas mesmo assim, são os suficientes para conseguir captar uns bons rastos de luz dos seus faróis.
Já tinha pensado há algum tempo em criar estas imagens para enviar para os sites de Microstock e finalmente tive essa oportunidade. Usei o meu tripé e um zoom 17-70 na minha Pentax K10D. Depois de definir a composição inclinada, escolhi o balanço de brancos e a abertura e tirei estas 5 imagens com valores EV diferentes (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). Depois de cerca de outras 30 fotos, fui para casa para as ver no computador e só então me apercebi de que me tinha esquecido de mudar o ISO para 100. O Auto ISO aplicou ISO 400 a todas e, por isso, com ruído a mais para o que é aceitável em sites stock. Agora tenho que lá voltar e fazer as coisa como deve ser!! De qualquer forma, peguei nestas 5 imagens, brinquei com elas no Photomatix e o resultado foi este HDR.
