Composite 05 - Fresh Juicy Fruits!

Aren't we all sick and tired of rainy and cold days? Wouldn't it be great to have some sunny days for a change?! Well, before you know it, Spring will be here and with it, the desire to get rid of heavy clothes and feel the warmth of the Sun again. So, boys and girls, It's time to think of a little diet with the help of fresh, juicy fruits to kill that belly, right?

Não estamos já todos fartinhos de dias frios e chuvosos? Não era óptimo ter uns dias de Sol para variar?! Bem, não tarda nada está aí a Primavera e com ela, a vontade de despir estas roupas pesadas e sentir o calor do Sol outra vez. Por isso, meninos e meninas, está na hora de pensar numa pequena dieta, com a ajuda de frutas frescas muito sumarentas, para darmos cado da barriguinha, certo?

HDR 03 - Blazing Sky

This set of 4 exposures was captured in my last Summer vacations, in August '08. The location was in Algarve near the beach of Pera, in a lake right behind the sand dunes.
I was guessing there was going to be a beautiful sunset so, as I was leaving the beach, I picked up my tripod from the car and headed to the lake. Soon I witnessed one of the most beautiful red, blazing skies I had ever seen! The clouds were on fire and the reflection in the water surface was amazing.
I looked for the best angle to take a few shots, with the HDR image in mind. I didn't have much time because the Sun was going down fast, so probably this was not the perfect point of view. Even so, I managed to compose the scene with some foreground texture to add interest and a sense of perspective to the image.
After merging the 4 exposures in Photomatix, I opened the resulting HDR in Photoshop to correct the lens distortion and add a boost in contrast.

Este grupo de 4 exposições foi tirado nas minhas últimas férias de Verão, em Agosto de 2008, no Algarve, perto da praia de Pera num lago que se encontra mesmo atrás das dunas.
Eu já estava a prever que ía estar um belo por-do-Sol, por isso, quando saí da praia, peguei no tripé que tinha no carro e dirigi-me para o lago. Pouco depois assisti a um dos mais espectaculares céus que tinha visto até então: De um vermelho fogo tão intenso que parecia que as nuvens estavam a arder. E o seu reflexo no lago era incrível! Procurei o melhor ângulo para tirar algumas fotos, já com o HDR em mente. Não tinha muito tempo porque o Sol depressa se escondia mais e por isso, provavelmente, este não era o melhor ponto de vista. Mesmo assim, procurei incluir na composição um pouco da textura do chão no primeiro plano para dar interesse e uma noção de perspectiva à imagem.
Depois de combinar as 4 exposições no Photomatix, abri o HDR resultante no Photoshop para corrigir a distorção e aumentar o contraste.

This turntable belongs to my family for ages! It was my father's toy in his Hi-Fi Geek period. Now he has a better one and this one is in my house, collecting dust.
Recently, when I was home cleaning, I decided to to take some photos of it and work them on Photoshop. Cleaning can wait...

Este gira-discos pertence à família há décadas! Era o brinquedo preferido do meu pai quando ele era maluquinho pela alta-fidelidade. Agora que tem um melhor, este está em minha casa a acumular pó. Um dia destes, eu estava em arrumações domésticas e decidi tirar-lhe umas fotos e trabalha-las no Photoshop. As arrumações podem esperar...

Composites 04 - Bad weather turns good

This image is quite popular in the sites where it is available for download. It's been there for about two years now and as it is composed with a few other photos, I decided to post it here.
The zipper photo is from a cheap backpack that had a huge zipper; The blue sky and ocean on the right are a winner composite that I use in some images, like I did in the one in this other post ; The ocean photo in the left is just another snapshot I took in a beach nearby.
The final composite was achieved by carefully selecting and isolating the zipper and then, adding the other photos with the help of the Photoshop masks.

"Abrindo o fecho, o mau tempo torna-se bom". Esta imagem é bastante popular nos sites onde está disponível para download. Já existe há uns 2 anos e como é composta por várias outras fotos, decidi publicá-la aqui. O fecho de correr pertence a uma mochila barata que tinha um fecho enorme atrás; O céu azul e o mar à direita constituem uma composição de sucesso que uso em várias outras imagens como esta que publiquei neste post; A foto do oceano à esquerda foi captada numa praia aqui por perto. O compósito final foi conseguido por cuidadosamente seleccionar e isolar o fecho e depois, adicionar as outras imagens com a ajuda das máscaras no Photoshop.

I was post-processing some photos to submit to the microstock sites and kind of liked the end result of this one.
Many times when I edit the images I'm not looking for a more or less realistic appearance. I pretend a visual impact and that may not be compatible with the reality of Nature.
In this case I've pushed the levels and curves to increase contrast, added a orange coloration to the sky and finally, I set the white balance to a warmer tone to fit the sunset light.

Na noite passada, estava a tratar imagens para submeter para os sites de microstock e acabei por gostar bastande to resultado final desta.
Muitas vezes, quando edito imagens, não procuro um aspecto mais ou menos realista, mas sim algum impacto visual e isso pode não corresponder ao que se vê na realidade na Natureza.
Neste caso, forcei um pouco os níveis e curvas para aumentar o contraste, adicionei uma cor alaranjada ao céu e, finalmente, ajustei o balanço de brancos para um tom mais quente, de acordo com a luz do pôr-do-sol.

Composite 03 - Umbrellas under rain

This one has just been accepted in Shutterstock.com and I hope it becomes a best-seller! As we're in the middle of the Winter, this is the right timing.
Funny that in the beginning I thought of a much simpler image with just one umbrella and a background with dark clouds, but the ideas started popping as I was editing in Photoshop! This is a much better result.

Esta imagem acabou de ser aprovada no Shutterstock.com e eu espero que venha a ser um sucesso de vendas. Como estamos no meio do Inverno, o timing é perfeito para este conceito.
É engraçado que no início tinha pensado em fazer uma imagem muito mais simples, só com um guarda-chuva sobre um plano de fundo de um céu de nuvens escuras, mas à medida que ia trabalhando no Photoshop, as ideias foram surgindo e... este resultado é muito melhor!

Before-After 02 - Wireless Ballooning?

It takes quite a bit of attention and patience to remove all the wires and ropes but keeping the textures beneath. I didn't bother to clone out the rest of that rope because the basket texture was tricky. But it was doable, I was only out of patience.

É preciso uma certa dose de atenção e paciência para remover todos os fios e cordas e ao mesmo tempo manter as texturas das superfícies por trás. Não me preocupei a retirar toda a corda da frente do cesto com uma textura meio complicada. Não era difícil mas eu estava sem paciência.

Composite 02 - Lamp and pear peel

This is an oldie. This was shot with my Pentax Optio 555 compact camera, some 3 years ago, even before knowing about the Microstock sites. Now, this image is my avatar in all the sites where I submit images to and is one of the best selling images in all of them.

Esta já é velhinha. Foi tirada com a minha compacta Pentax Optio 555, há cerca de 3 anos atrás, mesmo antes de saber sobre os sites de Microstock. Hoje, esta imagem é o meu avatar em todos os sites onde tenho imagens à venda e é uma das mais requisitadas em todos eles.

HDR 02 - Early Walk in the park...

This set of 5 exposures was captured in Lisbon, Belém area, at about 9 am.
There's a nice relation between the tree branches, the shadows and the iron work in the bench... and the warm light of the morning underlines the mood of the scene.

Passeio matinal no parque, com um perfume de flor de laranjeira no ar...
Este grupo de 5 exposições da mesma cena fou registado em Belém por volta das 9 horas .
Existe uma relação de formas entre os ramos da àrvore, as sombras no chão e o ferro trabalhado do banco de jardim... O tom da luz matinal também contribui para a ambiência.

Before-After 01 - End of day in the beach

What is Before-After?
Before-After posts are single photos that have been more or less enhanced in Photoshop. Some times I may use a slight detail from a different photo, but not enough to consider it a "Composite".
Color, contrast, sharpness, retouch and cropping to improve composition, are normal photo post-production procedures. Every time you see a photo in a magazine, poster, advertising, billboard, etc., you can be sure it has some degree of post-production. There isn't practically any camera that takes the perfect, ready to use photo right out of the memory card.

This image was captured in the evening of a December 08 day in Carcavelos beach.
I edited two layers with the same photo. One enhancing the sky, other enhancing the foreground. Then, I merged the two using layer masks, followed by filter-distort-lens correction to remove barrel distortion.

O que é Antes-Depois?
"Antes-Depois" são fotografias que foram mais ou menos retocadas e melhoradas no Photoshop. Por vezes poderei adicionar um pequeno detalhe proveniente de outra imagem mas de um modo subtil para não a considerar um "Compósito".
Cor, contraste, nitidez, retoque e reenquadramento para melhorar a composição, são procedimentos normais em pós-produção de fotografias. Sempre que vê uma imagem numa revista, anúncio, cartaz, embalagem, etc., pode ter a certeza que sofreu alguma pós-produção. Não existe praticamente nenhuma máquina fotográfica que registe uma imagem perfeita, pronta a usar, a partir do cartão de memória.
Passe o cursor do rato pela imagem para ver a original captada pela máquina.

Esta imagens foi registada num fim de tarde de Dezembro de 2008 na praia de Carcavelos.
No photoshop editei dois layers (camadas) com a mesma imagem: Num layer, trabalhei o céu, noutro, trabalhei o primeiro plano. Depois, combinei os dois usando as Layer-masks, seguido do filtro "distort" para corrigir a "distorção de barril" provocada pela grande-angular.

Composite 01 - Surfing Nostalgia

What is a composite?
I call "composite" to images composed with parts of different photos, not necessarily captured in the same location or at the same time.
When I have a photo that I want to improve, I often search in my older images for components with more or less the same light conditions and work them all together to achieve the desired result.
If I have the concept figured out in advance, I prepare all the parts and take photos in the same shoot. After that, it's all just Photoshop fun!
In this case, the van with the surfboard was instinctively snapped in October 2007 in a beach nearby my home and soon was forgotten in my hard-drive. About two weeks ago I decided to play with it and added a sky, photographed nearby in April 2008, and a calm clear sea, captured two years ago in a beach about 250km away.
It took me quite a while to finish this image because I had to improve the colors, re-build all the windows in the van and guess the reflections in the glass.
But the image it's not finished. I still have to add the windshield wipers.

O que é um Compósito?
Eu chamo "compósito" a imagens compostas por partes de outras fotos, não necessáriamente registadas no mesmo local ou na mesma altura. Quando tenho uma imagem que pretendo melhorar, costumo procurar, entre as minhas fotos mais antigas, componentes com mais ou menos as mesmas condições de luz e trabalho todos os pedaços até chegar ao resultado desejado. Se tenho um conceito pré-definido, preparo todos os adereços e fotografo tudo na mesma sessão. Depois disso é só brincar no Photoshop!

Neste caso, a carrinha com a prancha de surf foi instintivamente fotografada numa praia perto da minha casa em Outubro de 2007 mas foi rapidamente esquecida no disco rígido do meu cmputador. Há cerca de duas semanas, resolvi trabalhá-la e adicionei um céu fotografado nas redondezas em Abril 2008, e um mar límpido e calmo, registado há dois anos numa praia do Algarve. Demorei bastante a chegar a este resultado porque tive que melhorar as cores, reconstruir todas as janelas da carrinha e "inventar" os brilhos e reflexos que os vidros poderiam produzir. Mas a imagem não está acabada. Ainda tenho que lhe adicionar as escovas do pára-brisas.

HDR 01 - Centenary Tree

What is HDR?
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminance between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. It consists in combining several differently exposed images of the same scene (normaly between 3 to 5) to produce a single HDR image.

In this image, I captured 5 different exposures of the scene and combined them in Photomatix. After that, I further improved it in Photoshop with a bit of burn and dodge tools. I also cloned a few more leafs in the foreground.

O que é HDR?
High Dynamic Range (HDR) é uma técnica que permite uma maior gama dinâmica de tons entre altas e baixas luzes de uma cena do que a obtida com uma normal fotografia digital. Consiste em combinar diferentes exposições de uma mesma cena (normalmente entre 3 e 5 registos), para produzir uma única imagem HDR.

Nesta imagem, registei 5 exposições diferentes da mesma cena e combinei-as no Photomatix. Depois disso, ainda a melhorei no Photoshop com as ferramentas "burn" e "dodge" para acentuar contrastes. Também clonei algumas folhas para preencher espaços vazios no chão no primeiro plano.

Hello! Welcome to PicSweep, my new photo-blog.
I will be posting here my recent work as photographer and photoshoper. It may be before/after stages of post-production, High Dynamic Range (HDR) images and composites. I may also write some notes about my great experience in the Microstock market or any other topic worth sharing. Anyway, expect more images and less talk, though I welcome all your comments, constructive critiques, questions and suggestions.

Here's to 2009 and wishes for it to be a great year in every front for us all. I hope it brings all those well known - but not less important - cliches of peace, health, wealth and lots of great, successful photos, full of "shining, happy pixels"! Oh, and I also hope I have what it takes to keep sweeping in this place for a loooong time.

I hope you'll excuse me for the more than probable lack of accuracy in my English, because it is not my native language.

Olá! Bem-vindo ao PicSweep, o meu novo foto-blog.
A partir de hoje, vou publicar aqui o meu mais recente trabalho como fotógrafo e photoshoper. Poderão ser estados antes/depois da pós-produção, imagens High Dynamic Range (HDR) ou imagens compostas por várias outras fotografias. Posso igualmente vir a escrever algumas notas sobre a minha entusiasmante experiência no mercado Microstock, ou qualquer outro assunto que julgue relevante ou que queira partilhar. De qualquer modo, esperem mais imagens e menos conversa, apesar de apelar à vossa colaboração com comentários, crítica construtiva, questões ou sugestões.

Desejo que o novo ano de 2009 seja o melhor possível para todos. Além de todos os conhecidos - mas não menos importantes - clichés de paz, saúde e dinheiro, espero que este ano traga muitas, bem sucedidas, fantásticas fotos cheias de impacto e de "shining, happy pixels". E espero também ter o que é preciso para publicar regularmente e manter este blog por muuuuuito tempo.

Decidi escrever em inglês e em português. Cada "post" terá a categoria a que pertence (label) e um título em Inglês. O respectivo texto aparecerá nas duas línguas.
