Composite 19 - Global Drought

Imagine a world without water. No rain, no rivers, no oceans, no snow. A global drought leading to the end of all life forms. Relax! That's just fiction... for now.
..........
"Seca Global". Calma! Isso é só ficção... por enquanto.

COMPOSITE 18 - Stretch and Catch Your Dreams

In a foggy summer day last August I took this photo in the beach where some wooden structures, supposed to serve as beach beds in a sunny day, were lying in line in the sand, unattended. The flock of seagulls was shot in that same day a few minutes later and the ocean was shot in October. I decided to play with the images and this was the result. A dreamy mood with the "Stretch and Catch Your Dreams" concept.

composite 17 - Computing Outdoors

I miss summer already... The gray days are settled and I found myself with my computer outdoors, looking at the horizon and daydreaming about blue skyes, sunshine and a serene, inviting ocean. Fortunately - or unfortunately for other reasons - time flies and summer will be there in a wink.
..........

COMPOSITE 16 - Fallen on Cobblestone

Autumn is here! Arrived today at the northern hemisphere, although the remnants of the warm summer are still around and hopefully will be throughout October. I refuse to leave my shorts and beach slippers so soon! Not that I don't like Autumn!... As long as the Sun shines, that's fine for me... And the sunlight in this season is great to shoot outside all day, because the Sun is lower and the light's not so harsh at noon.
This image is already one year old and as it hasn't been published before in the blog, I'm doing it now, welcoming Autumn and its beautiful colors.
I picked one photo of a deciduous tree leaf and arranged it in Photoshop to look like a paper photo print. Then I duplicated it in several layers over the cobblestone pavement background, distributing them according to the perspective, composing the best I could. For the final touch I did some rotation and curling of the corners using the "Free Transform > Wrap" tool and applied subtle "Drop Shadows" according the low sunlight from the front.
..........
"Caídas no Pavimento".

Composite 15 - Beach Rhino

I'm working on a series of images where I pretend a slight surreal effect caused by the localization of wild animals in habitats that are not quite their own but that would be possible to witness if someone would actually place them in those locations. As I don't have, at the moment, the required logistical, financial and persuasion means to actually make the authorities of some wild life natural park carry an Indian rhinoceros and strategically place it in an European beach for me to take a few photos, I have to be creative and spend as little as possible. With that in mind, I frequently go to the local Zoo to take the best photos possible of the animals, that can be workable with Photoshop later on. In this particular case, I already had the rhino portrait but had not decided which environment to paste it into. So I browsed many of my older photos and pick one from a beach where I went on vacations a few years ago. The light conditions were very similar to the rhino's photo so they would match perfectly.
In Photoshop, I masked the rhino and placed it in the right spot of the beach; then I duplicated the layer and flipped it upside-down to make the reflection. Then I copied a section of the stripped texture in the sand and used it in a new channel to mask the reflection. The shadow under the animal was drawn with a soft brush.
You can see here an older post from the same series.
..........

Composite 14 - From St. Valentine With Love

February is the month of lovers. For all of you happy souls madly in love, St. Valentine is launching a rain of passion red hearts from the sky, to praise your relationships and make them grow stronger! :-)
For this image I used a photo of a red bow in a box of chocolates that I placed in a red heart that I had previously edited from a photo of a big heart-shape chocolate box. I turned the bow a golden one and then I placed the composite against a nice soft cloudy sky. I duplicated and scaled down the heart a few times and finally I added a slight motion blur to suggest that they are falling.
This image is available for download in Shutterstock.com.
Happy Valentine's day!

"De S. Valentim com Amor". Fevereiro é o mês dos amantes. Para todos vocês, almas felizes loucamente apaixonadas, o S. Valentim lança do céu uma chuva de corações vermelho paixão, para enaltecer as vossas relações e fazê-las crescer mais sólidas! :-)
Feliz Dia Dos Namorados!

Composite 13 - Flying Off The Monitor

This is my new laptop. I went camping last summer and took it with me, so that the detachment from technology in general and Photoshop in particular wouldn't be too abrupt. ;)
One day I was sitting outside, setting up the computer and I decided to take a shot of it, without giving much thought about what to do with the image afterward. The laptop was evenly lit with the natural light and I didn't care about the reflections in the monitor. I placed my camera in the tripod and fired a few shots using the self timer.
One month later, at home, I opened one of the images in Photoshop and started to sweep it: Levels, curves, brightness, contrast, saturation, desaturation, burn, dodge, clone, heal... well, all the usual steps of my post-processing. Then I start choosing some other older photos, previously edited, - some of them have been published here in the past months - to place them in the monitor of the laptop, in the way you see above, to finish the composition. I hope you like it!
..........
"Voando Para Fora do Monitor".
Coloquei a câmara no tripé e fiz alguns disparos utilizando o "self timer".

Composite 12 - Long Limping to Destination

For this image, I thought about a "focus-in-your-aspirations-and-goals-even-if-the-path-to-get-there-is-a-long-and-painful-one-but-you-know-that-if-you-stick-to-it-you-soon-will-see-the-light-in-the-horizon" concept. :-)
Three different photos combined together in a new image.
What do you think?

Três fotos diferentes combinadas numa nova imagem.

Composite 11 - Tiger By The River Lima

I decided to recover an old photo montage that was done with a photo that I took in the River Lima, in the north of Portugal, and one of a tiger that I snapped in the Lisbon Zoo some 2 years ago.
The houses in the horizon and the stone road mark are signs of nearby civilization so, a wild tiger peacefully resting in the river shore and near a road is much unlikely to be seen, at least in this part of the globe. And this surreal touch is exactly what makes this image interesting for me. The tweaked colors and the fake fog that I added in the post-production also helped to the final result.
What do you think?
..........
"Tigre no Rio Lima".
Qual é a vossa opinião?

Composite 10 - four out of one

Now that the Summer is almost there and the days start to get warmer, who can resist the temptation to have one of these tasty ice creams? What flavor do you want? Strawberry or Pineapple? Raspberry? Orange maybe? Choose at will!
As I only had one, I took some photos of it on top of a yogurt glass jar against a white background so it could be easily extracted. In Photoshop I used the cloning tool to correct some imperfections in the ice particles and applied the liquify tool to improve the shape of the ice cream wherever it was needed. To change the colors, I used the selective colors modifier.
A blurred sky gives the illusion of limited depth of field. The reflection is a duplicate of the layer, flipped upside down, with 25% oppacity and some wave distortion filter to simulate a wet surface.
Yummy! Some indulgence, these ice creams, right?!
..........

Composite 09 - Surf Dude?

Naaa... Not quite. He wish he was that cool! This is my nephew. He's more into "Magic The Gathering" and the closest he has been to a board was with his fingers in a tiny Tech Deck skateboard. He wouldn't hang in a surfboard for 2 seconds! :-D
Browsing older photos in my hard-drive, I found this portrait of him that I took last year. I decided to work a bit on it and added a nice cloudy sky. Then I thought: "He looks like a surfer with that long, wet blond hair. What if I add that surfboard that I snapped in that beach last month?..."
He liked the final image so much that it is now on his Hi5 profile.
..........

Composite 07 - Easter Eggs Rain

Easter is almost there so, because it has all to do with loads of candies and happy children, I decided to create this colorful composite.
It took only two photos: One of the smiling girl shrugging shoulders and one of a single chicken egg. In photoshop, I selected and isolated the egg and painted it differently several times. Then, I did the same selection and isolation to the child's photo, placed it on a gradient background and finally, I composed the falling eggs and applied a bit of motion blur to give a sense of movement.
This image was selected by Shutterstock to appear in the Easter Lightbox and is selling very well, having reached the weekly TOP 50 of photos last week! HAPPY EASTER!!
..........

Composite 06 - Global Financial Headache...

...Is all around us. Every day we watch the news, there's always one more company closing doors, contributing to the raising of unemployment. Tens or hundreds of workers, suddenly find themselves with no work, no revenue and no solution in sight. But the bills to pay will always be there, every month. They find no sympathy. Mortgage, car loan, phone, cable TV, Internet, gas, electricity, water, insurance, supermarket, kids education,... And we count our pennies and we wish they were made of rubber so that they could stretch. But they are not and we have to think how we get through! So we get this terrible headache...
For this image, I made the paper sheets in 3D and everything else is Photoshop work.
..........

Composite 05 - Fresh Juicy Fruits!

Aren't we all sick and tired of rainy and cold days? Wouldn't it be great to have some sunny days for a change?! Well, before you know it, Spring will be here and with it, the desire to get rid of heavy clothes and feel the warmth of the Sun again. So, boys and girls, It's time to think of a little diet with the help of fresh, juicy fruits to kill that belly, right?

Composites 04 - Bad weather turns good

This image is quite popular in the sites where it is available for download. It's been there for about two years now and as it is composed with a few other photos, I decided to post it here.
The zipper photo is from a cheap backpack that had a huge zipper; The blue sky and ocean on the right are a winner composite that I use in some images, like I did in the one in this other post ; The ocean photo in the left is just another snapshot I took in a beach nearby.
The final composite was achieved by carefully selecting and isolating the zipper and then, adding the other photos with the help of the Photoshop masks.

Composite 03 - Umbrellas under rain

This one has just been accepted in Shutterstock.com and I hope it becomes a best-seller! As we're in the middle of the Winter, this is the right timing.
Funny that in the beginning I thought of a much simpler image with just one umbrella and a background with dark clouds, but the ideas started popping as I was editing in Photoshop! This is a much better result.
..........

Composite 02 - Lamp and pear peel

This is an oldie. This was shot with my Pentax Optio 555 compact camera, some 3 years ago, even before knowing about the Microstock sites. Now, this image is my avatar in all the sites where I submit images to and is one of the best selling images in all of them.

Composite 01 - Surfing Nostalgia

What is a composite?
I call "composite" to images composed with parts of different photos, not necessarily captured in the same location or at the same time.
When I have a photo that I want to improve, I often search in my older images for components with more or less the same light conditions and work them all together to achieve the desired result.
If I have the concept figured out in advance, I prepare all the parts and take photos in the same shoot. After that, it's all just Photoshop fun!
In this case, the van with the surfboard was instinctively snapped in October 2007 in a beach nearby my home and soon was forgotten in my hard-drive. About two weeks ago I decided to play with it and added a sky, photographed nearby in April 2008, and a calm clear sea, captured two years ago in a beach about 250km away.
It took me quite a while to finish this image because I had to improve the colors, re-build all the windows in the van and guess the reflections in the glass.
But the image it's not finished. I still have to add the windshield wipers.
..........
